![]() Character models are made to look like porcelain dolls and have immense amount of detail, although their faces have small features that make emotions sometimes difficult to read. The animation is fantastically whimsical and stylized, and really gives the film a unique look. Other than these lyrics that do not seem to fit the rest of the film, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is a great film for children. ![]() Having a young child say these lyrics is slightly awkward. This film seems like it is targeting children, yet there are some rather provocative lines in certain songs for a child’s film, such as: The film is far from normal, it is quite peculiar and odd, but in an endearing way. Main plot points are somewhat predictable, but the meat of the story is hidden in the minutia of each scene, and the whole film ties together quite well at the end. Malzieu did a truly fantastic job with the story. Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is a French animated film, and is based off of a book titled ‘The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart’ by Mathias Malzieu, lead singer for French rock band Dionysos. Will Jack find a way to control his emotions and stay alive or will Miss Acacia be the death of him?Īs a side note, I believe the trailer reveals a bit too much of the story, so if you wish to discover the story from the film itself, stop the trailer around the 50 second mark. Once in the town, Jack meets a young girl named Miss Acacia (so called because when she gets scared, she grows acacia thorns on her shoulders) playing a barrel organ, and almost immediately falls in love with her. Finally, on his birthday, Madeleine relents and allows him to visit the town, but not before reminding him of the rules he must follow to keep his heart ticking. Third, and most important, Jack must never ever fall in love, for love is too much for his cuckoo-clock heart to handle.Īs a young child, Jack is kept in Madeleine’s house atop a hill overlooking Edinburgh, but Jack yearns to explore the world around him. Firstly, Jack must never touch the hands of his clock. ![]() Because of his cuckoo-clock heart, Madeleine gives Jack three rules he must live by if he is to survive. Fortunately Madeleine always wanted a child of her own, and decides to raise him as her own. That night, Jack’s mother decides to leave, abandoning him with Madeleine. Luckily he is in the care of midwife Madeleine, who cuts out his frozen heart and replaces it with a cuckoo-clock. Jack is born on the coldest day of the year, so cold in fact that his heart is frozen solid. Set in 1874 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart begins with a pregnant mother rushing herself to a midwife in the snow before giving birth to a boy named Jack.
